Student Look - Grace Kim

Grace Kim talks design philosophy, advice to first year BIA students and the role research had on her scheme.

Describe your proposal in 3 key words:

Playful, A journey, A clustering

1. What is your design philosophy?

My design philosophy is an appreciation of minimalism in design. There is power in simplicity in design where one simple gesture can imply many things. To get to the simplicity of design there is an importance in design process, as one has to go through many iterations in order to come to the refined end result. I find the design process intriguing especially when I have to find creative solutions to design problems.

2. What advice would you give to any first years / things you wish you knew that could have benefited you:

Some advice to give to first years may be to absorb the history, culture and trends in design as much as you can. This helps with designing and also builds upon your design vocabulary. I read a lot of design books of famous designers, which helped me to understand the scope of design and this will help you develop your design style.

3. What role did research have on your scheme?

Research was very essential in developing my scheme. Through research I was able to derive the needed typology of the area, which then led me to more research in how to develop the typology. Every part of my design was enriched by research especially looking at precedence of other designers. You have to know what other designers are designing in order to be challenged by their ideas.
