Student Look - Lucille McCall

Lucille McCall talks development of her design mentality, favourite course undertaken within the BIA & the role research has played on her graduation scheme.

1. Describe your proposal in 3 key words:
Potent, Creative and Collaborative.

2. How has your design mentality evolved over the 4 years in the BIA? 
Over my years in the BIA I have developed a deep appreciation of detail design in interiors. When first starting out in Interior Architecture I saw spatial design revolve around planning and a big sculptural impact. Only in my later years of the course I have learnt the beauty behind intelligent interior detailing of a space. Interiors do not need to have one quick impact but can be subtle, slowly experienced and appreciated. Another design mentality that has evolved is the understanding of our role as Interior Architects. We are designers for people. Our design needs to constantly reflect on this notion- we design for a human needs, wants and imaginations. What I love about my learning experience of the BIA is my ability to now critically view the spaces I encounter. Whether in a bar, store or gallery I am always looking up and around- appreciating the design or perhaps considering alternatives. I think this gained ability to perceive and reflect on the environments I encounter helps me develop as a designer and define my aesthetic taste.

3. What is your favourite course you’ve studied in the BIA? 
Studio as a whole through the years has been an enjoyable challenge to undertake each semester. I am always talking to my friends and family about our latest briefs and while often complaining of the late nights I have always remained passionate about the course and the projects undertook. It is so exciting coming into studio pin-up at the end of semester and seeing all the different visions students have proposed from the same site. Alongside studio this semester I am studying an inter-disciplinary elective ‘Vision to reality’. We are required to take on the profession of another person in our group i.e. the Interior designer becomes the construction manager. As our new professions we are then required to write a consultant report of a recent large-scale development. The emphasis is on what we will be doing and achieving as leaders in our adopted professions in 2020. The lectures have been very interesting especially learning of the emerging technology advancements expected for the industry e.g. Microsoft Hololens. It is fascinating from an interior point of view, as we often don’t have too much involvement in the construction and management side of projects. I am learning a lot of new things from this course and think the inter-disciplinary subjects are a really worthy experience of the BIA.

4. What role did research have on your graduation scheme?
I came into final year knowing what I was interested in designing- I knew I wanted my final project of the degree to reflect who I am and what I was passionate about. The Artist Turbine could only be through vigorous research of the White Bay Power Station and the surrounding culture and demographics of the City of Sydney. As part of my initial investigation I issued questionnaires to artists of different mediums to make sure my design could successfully accommodated their needs as creatives. This was very valuable for my design development as it gave solid information of the differing requirements between artists and posed useful questions; what do photographers require that ceramicists don’t? How can these spaces coincide in a collaborative environment? The questionnaires also gave a glimpse into what artists ideally desire in their creative spaces allowing my design to veer away from the generic mould of the artist studio. This has enabled the development of detailed and flexible studio pods to accommodate different creative influence. The design of the Artist turbine is aspiring to generate the next artists of our generation with emphasises on collaboration and community involvement. Through research I was able to realise my vision and logistically work out the requirements that were necessary for a cohesive artist environment.
