C O E X I S T - sydney community art centre

brief

After thirty years of human absence, the native flora began to reclaim the iconic industrial landmark. This conflicting yet harmonious scenery inspired the idea behind 'COEXIST'. As a multicultural city, Sydney has always been a place of 'coexisting'. People from various background come together and have conversation. I decided to introduce 'ART' into this industrial site because art has ability to cultivate expression between different culture regardless of barriers. Sydney Community Art Centre is proposed to provide a place for local artists and residents to meet, communicate, create, see, contemplate, linger and stay. Architecturally, a new modern structural system is proposed to be installed throughout the industrial site, to celebrate a form of coexisting and interacting.

The new interior experience will recreate the process of how nature reclaim the site. Six phases are proposed as six different spaces - city, ruin, revival, coexist, forest, eclipse; as approach, open creative space, workshop, gallery, contemplative space, restaurant bar.

project

C I T Y

(entry space)

this phase aims to guide the visitors to look back to the history of white bay power station. these historical monuments represent the form of this city. the strong relationship between this city and the power station is reflected and highlights the white bay power station's worth as it had been providing electricity to the city for decades. This phase is also the earliest stage before nature started to reclaim this site.

the entry space is consist of a number of historical monuments, which symbolise the former purpose of white bay power station. the shape also represents the city. specially designed black and white fluid pattern marble is used for floor to highlight the circulation direction, the pattern also implys the pollution that power station had caused to the city in the past.

R U I N

(open studio/viewing space)

in 1983, the white bay power station ceased production. during the 1990s, the site was decontaminated, asbestos was removed and majority of the remaining machinery was taken away. the site was abandoned and the existing surface of buildings started to weather and become damaged. This phase aims to revive the process of deconstruction.

open structure is proposed for the exterior of the site for scenery viewing and art making. essential art equipments are installed or provided onsite. the form of this structure represents the deconstruction of white bay power station over decades.

(workshop/educational centre)

after over 30 years of human absence, nature started to reclaim the site. native flora had grown in places near and within the site. at this stage, nature is just a sprout, it represents the rebirth, the new life. the site evolution has commenced.

the boiler house is renovated into a combination of workshop studios, classrooms and artist in residence. raw timber battens are widely used to represent the revival of nature.

C O E X I S T

(gallery/exhibition venue)

as time goes by, nature has grown greatly and it shares an equal proportion as the site. the plants and industrial existings create a beautifully conflicting yet harmonious scenery of coexistence.

the color/material theme of gallery space is contrasting black and white in order to indicate the idea of coexistence. also an organic  structured ceiling is proposed to contrast with the linear style of general gallery space. existing machinary are preserved and displayed to visitors. natural material such as solid tree trunk and timber are used for display plinth and seating area.

F O R E S T

(contemplative space)

at this stage, nature has dominated the site with its fortress of healthy green foliage and enticing scent of Australia's finest living colours. the space has been reshaped, industrial trace becomes vague and is defeated by the power of nature. this phase is a celebration of a new era.

a number of raw silver birth trunk are installed on the side of walkway in contemplative space. stained glass ceiling with pendent light and string installation are proposed to create a poetic experience of walking in the woods. overall an artificial forest is create in this space to show the dominance of nature.

E C L I P S E

(restaurant bar)

this phase represents the successful invasion of nature over this host. all is now dark but a dim trace of halo. the industrial world is no more. this is the end of a journey for one form and an entirely new beginning for another. go back to nature, back to basics.

this space aim to create an experience of eclipse using least natural light and dim artificial light. neon light rods and signs are the main light source in the space.
